While Australia doesn't experience the extreme winters of some countries, winter driving still presents unique challenges. Wet roads, fog, reduced visibility, and cooler temperatures require extra caution and preparation.

Preparing Your Vehicle

Before winter sets in, ensure your vehicle is ready for challenging conditions:

  • Check your tires for adequate tread depth and proper inflation
  • Test your battery - cold weather can reduce battery performance
  • Ensure your windshield wipers are in good condition
  • Check all lights are working properly
  • Top up your windshield washer fluid
  • Have your brakes inspected

Driving in Wet Conditions

Wet roads significantly reduce traction and increase stopping distances:

  • Reduce Speed: Drive slower than usual, especially on unfamiliar roads
  • Increase Following Distance: Allow at least 4-5 seconds between you and the vehicle ahead
  • Avoid Sudden Movements: Brake, accelerate, and steer smoothly
  • Watch for Aquaplaning: If you feel the car sliding, ease off the accelerator and steer straight
  • Use Headlights: Turn on your headlights in rain, even during the day

Fog Driving Safety

Fog can dramatically reduce visibility:

  • Use low beam headlights - high beams reflect off fog and reduce visibility
  • Reduce speed significantly
  • Use fog lights if your vehicle has them
  • Follow road markings to stay in your lane
  • If visibility is extremely poor, consider pulling over safely until conditions improve

Early Morning and Evening Driving

Winter brings shorter days and longer nights:

  • Be extra cautious during dawn and dusk when visibility is reduced
  • Watch for wildlife, especially in rural areas
  • Ensure your headlights are clean and properly adjusted
  • Allow extra time for your journey

Emergency Kit

Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle:

  • First aid kit
  • Torch with extra batteries
  • Blanket or warm clothing
  • Water and non-perishable snacks
  • Mobile phone charger
  • Reflective warning triangle

By following these tips and staying alert, you can navigate winter conditions safely and confidently.
